In their first face-to-face debate, Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert and real estate executive Anne Raymond sparred over whether the city government should build a publicly owned Dallas Convention Center hotel, especially in the midst of dreadful economic conditions.
“It’s the best time to build it,” Leppert argued, explaining that construction costs are low and the national economy will improve long-term.
“It’s a terrible time to move forward. The hotel industry is falling off a cliff,” Raymond, who leads an organization attempting to block the hotel through a public referendum, shot back.
Their comments came during the Friday morning taping of Inside Texas Politics, which is scheduled to air at 9 a.m. Sunday on WFAA-TV (Channel 8).
